How you date them ?

Signatures, labels and forms

Click to zoom the imageUntil 1922, all the Thonet pieces of furniture are systematically signed.

  • Before 1860: a mark in hollow.

  • Between 1860 and 1888: a mark in hollow and a label.

  • Between 1888 and 1922: a mark printed with ink and a label.

During the same time, the competitors of Thonet also sign their parts. Kohn employs the same system as Thonet, with a mark and a label; Mixed Fischel both and Mundus is satisfied with a mark.
Markings sometimes disappeared with the passing of years: separated labels, impression and even engravings unobtrusive or filled by new layers of varnish.
It is thus not rare to find truths movable Thonet deprived of identification. In this case, if you wish really to date them, examine their forms. The amounts of the models of XIXe century are fine; those of XXe are thicker. If it is impossible to specify a diameter of reference, because the variations are important, a comparison “with the eye†is enough to make the difference.
These differences are related to a relative reduction in quality. To produce more at lower cost, the Thonet workshops used more wood of lower quality, with cuts of higher sections to limit the risks of rupture during bending. It should be noted that this least quality does not have any consequence for the user and the solidity of the pieces of furniture manufactured during the production.

Lastly, the pieces of furniture corresponding at the time of art Déco are recognizable with their more rectilinear amounts and sometimes square sections.

The Councils of maintenance of THONET.

Always in the form of labels, Thonet always applied under the base of the councils of maintenance. This in order not to let settle a play in the assembly of the piece of furniture.

By tightening some times the screws with which our seats are assembled, one contribute to increase the duration and solidity by it.
