To tie, bind, braid, weave vegetable fibres are old activities like the world. The men of the Neolithic era left many traces of basket making on their potteries.
As a Gaulle the wicker was cultivated quickly. The manufacture of the baskets occupied the women in winter. The trade of basket maker appeared about 1300: the corbellor of wicker, the fascor of baskets and the corbillonier. The corporation of the basket makers is removed 'in 1776 and those gather in community.
During all the XIXe century the work of the wicker intensifies,
"Where pushes the wicker saw the basket maker"
about 1900 cane appears. But the great crisis which shakes France stops this prosperity and,
nowadays,
the foreign imports amplify this decline.
Basket and let us corbillons, bannetons, baskets, flutter, casserettes, pancake sellers, lucettes, crocanes, glaneuses, launches, drinking cupsā€¦ like trunks, bags, and basket with linen but also baskets of headstocks, mini-bottles straws and basket lilipput: more than 100 old French basket makings - will be exposed and sold of the Thursday 13 to Monday October 24,1988. |
